Laser Therapy or "photobiomodulation" is the use of specific wavelengths of light to create therapeutic effects. Results include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling.
Has effectiveness been demonstrated scientifically?
Laser Therapy has been widely utilized since the 1970's in Europe. Since FDA clearance in 2002, laser is being used extensively in the United States. There are over one hundred rigorously controlled, scientific studies that document the clinical effectiveness of laser for many conditions.
What does a treatment feel like?
There is very little sensation during treatment. Occasionally a mild, soothing warmth is noticed.
Are there any side effects?
Few side effects have ever been noticed. Occasionally old injuries or pain syndromes may feel aggravated briefly as the healing response is activated.
How long does each treatment take?
The typical course of treatment is 3 to 9 minutes, depending on the size and location of the area treated.
How many treatments does it take?
It depends on the nature of the condition treated. Acute conditions may resolve in as little as 1 to 6 treatments. Chronic conditions such as severe arthritis, may take longer to resolve and may need ongoing periodic care to control pain.
How long before results are noticed?
Many patients report significant pain relief after their first treatment. Sometimes improvement may not be felt right away. Each treatment is cumulative and results are often felt after 3 or 4 sessions.
